What is different about basements in Ashwaubenon

Ashwaubenon grew fast between 1960 and 1980. The village's 2025 comprehensive plan counts 30.7% of housing units built in the 1970s alone, and Census estimates put the median home at 1978. That means many basements have foundation drains and sump systems that are 45 years old or more.

According to that plan, most of the village sits on Kewaunee and Oshkosh silt loams, which generally drain well. The poorly drained exceptions are alluvial land along the Dutchmans Creek tributaries and Manawa silty clay loam southeast of Lambeau Field and near the I-41 interchanges at Waube Lane and Lombardi Avenue. The Dutchmans Creek 100-year floodplain also covers parts of S. Oneida Street, Holmgren Way, Hansen Road and nearby streets. The village says some areas are more prone to sanitary sewer backups. Its sewer backup page recommends a backwater valve and backup coverage on your insurance.

Village sump pump and permit rules

The Ashwaubenon Municipal Code is specific:

  • No clear water from a sump pump or roof drain may go into the sanitary sewer (sec. 22-5-112). Every foundation drain must connect to a sump pit with an approved pump (sec. 5-3-561).
  • Where a storm sewer is available, clear water goes there. Without one, discharge goes onto the ground at least one foot from the building, or through a conduit to a ditch or dry well, without creating a nuisance for neighbors.
  • No discharge into a public street from November 1 to March 31. From April 1 to October 31 you need a written permit from the operations superintendent. Water may not run across a sidewalk.
  • If a discharge causes icing, ponding or runoff onto a neighbor's lot, the plumbing inspector can require a storm sewer lateral.
  • Any building sold with clear water entering the sanitary sewer must be corrected within one year of the sale (sec. 5-3-562).

Permits go through the Building Inspection Department, which takes plans as PDFs at build@ashwaubenon.gov. The code says ordinary repairs are exempt, but not replacing plumbing equipment or removing structural supports (sec. 5-1-40).

Cost notes for Ashwaubenon

Ashwaubenon is close to Green Bay, so travel time adds little to most quotes. The bigger cost swing is a storm lateral: if the inspector requires one, the street opening also needs a permit. Typical ranges are in the waterproofing cost guide and the sump pump cost guide.
